The two have worked closely since the late 1960s, when Gray arrived at Caltech. In this interview, Gray provides some background. How did you come to Caltech? I grew up in southern Kentucky. I got my BS in chemistry in 1957, and my professors told me to go to grad school at Northwestern University in Evanston, Illinois, to continue my studies in synthetic organic chemistry.
